Captain Peter McWatters
Captain Peter McWatters is an 18-year veteran of the Grand Rapids Police Department. He has served in several roles during his tenure including Patrol, the Special Response Team, and the Training Bureau while taking on additional responsibilities as a Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. In 1997, he was assigned as an Acting Sergeant and was promoted to Sergeant in 1998. During his tenure as Sergeant, he served as a team leader in the Special Response Team, patrol supervisor for East Service Area, and as the Training Bureau Sergeant. Captain McWatters was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2004 and served as the administrative Lieutenant in the East and West Service Areas as well as the Watch Commander for third shift. From July 2007 through August 2010, Captain McWatters was the commander of the Internal Affairs Unit. On July 1, 2011, he was promoted to Captain in charge of the North Service Area.
Captain McWatters has received numerous Letters of Commendation and Letters of Recognition, five Meritorious Unit Citations, one Achievement Medal, and one Distinguished Service Medal.
In addition to his professional experience, Captain McWatters holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Ferris State University.
