A cemetery is not only a resting place for those who have passed on, but it is also a place of comfort for the living who mourn in remembrance of their loved ones. There are many choices when considering a burial option and we recommend pre-planning for the following benefits: 1) eliminates future price increases, 2) better selection of lots, and 3) peace of mind knowing that others will not have to make these difficult decisions for you.

Grand Rapids’ City Cemeteries offers single lot, multiple lot, and lawn crypts for full body or cremains. Interment of cremains in a columbarium is also an option at Woodlawn and Fairplains cemeteries.
Interments can be scheduled with or without a graveside service. Woodlawn Cemetery also has a Chapel available that can be used for a service prior to the interment. This is a great option for interments during the winter months.

The City of Grand Rapids does not buy back any grave spaces. If you no longer have a need for the spaces purchased, you may transfer them to someone else by completing a Transfer of Burial Rights. This document and a $40 fee (check or cash) must be provided to the City Cemetery Office (201 Market Ave SW, Grand Rapids MI 49503). Once the Transfer of Burial Rights and $40 are received, a deed will be sent to the new owner.
Complete a Burial Authorization Form for each space that you wish to have reserved. Note that this form must be notarized. Once the form has been completed, return it to the City Cemetery Office at 201 Market Ave SW, Grand Rapids MI 49503 by US Mail or in person.
