    About Us

The Labor Relations Department serves over 1,400 City employees and numerous members of the public each day. We are responsible for all activities concerning labor and employee relations regarding City employees including acting as the Chief Spokesperson as designated by the City Manager, for purposes of negotiating the collective bargaining agreements. Currently this includes eight (8) bargaining agreements as well as functioning as a resource to the Grand Rapids Public Library and 61st District Court. The Department also provides other City Departments and employees guidance on the proper interpretation of the bargaining agreements; investigates and administers disciplinary actions for the majority of City departments; works with the Internal Affairs Unit of the Police Department on cases of employee misconduct; administers the grievance procedures including advocating arbitration cases; represents the City in various administrative proceedings; and acts as Hearing Officer for various City license appeal hearings.
