On the average in the United States someone dies in a fire every 2.5 hours. Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and related injuries and fires caused by candles has more than doubled. Approximately half of home fire deaths occur in homes without operating smoke detectors. Children under 5 and adults over 65 are the most at risk groups.

The fire statistics in the United States are alarming and the Grand Rapids Fire Department's Fire Safety Education information is available to help educate the community of Grand Rapids in order to help decrease the potential for a citizen of Grand Rapids becoming a statistic.
