The project resurfaced the street and returned the street geometry to its existing configuration with a vehicle lane and a bike lane in each direction with a center turn lane.
Additionally, this project installed an interlayer pavement mat to enhance pavement strength. This method is new to Grand Rapids so the mat was installed on 80 percent of the project as an experiment to see how the road with the mat wears over time compared to the portion without the mat.
Based on feedback received at the Community Priorities and Concept Design Meeting in January, the semi-circle curb at the northeast corner of Plymouth and Fulton was moved east approximately 8 to 10 feet to better accommodate bus turning movements. The project was originally slated to include green infrastructure, but this element was taken out.
The road was rotomilled and resurfaced as a road rehabilitation process that will extend the road life which prevented costlier reconstruction. Sidewalks and ramps were upgraded to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
