    Grand Rapids SmartZoneSM issues Request for Proposals
    Funds Available to Support of High-Tech Businesses and Entrepreneurs
    9/11/17: Grand Rapids, Mich – The Grand Rapids SmartZoneSM Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA) today issued a Request for Proposals (RFP). The purpose of the RFP is to identify investment opportunities that support high-technology businesses and entrepreneurs by furthering the strategic priorities of the Grand Rapids SmartZoneSM LDFA. Up to $2.5 million could be awarded to successful applicants.
    “During the past two years, the SmartZoneSM LDFA has done significant work to bring their priorities in line with the ever-changing context of high-technology innovation and entrepreneurship,” stated Kara Wood, Grand Rapids SmartZoneSM LDFA executive director. “This RFP will allow us to seek out new ways to further those priorities in Grand Rapids.”
    Enabled by State legislation, SmartZonesSM are distinct geographical locations in Michigan where technology-based firms, entrepreneurs and researchers locate in close proximity to assets, creating a cluster of community institutions. SmartZonesSM are an economic development tool that allows the capture of increased property tax dollars for investment within the SmartZoneSM to foster development and attraction of technology-based businesses and jobs.
    “This is an opportunity for the SmartZoneSM LDFA to fund initiatives that support Grand Rapids as the ‘Place’ for high-tech innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Jerry Kooiman, chairperson of the Grand Rapids SmartZoneSM LDFA and assistant dean of External Relations at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. “The SmartZoneSM LDFA has developed a vision; now we are looking to forge new partnerships and move to the next level.”

    Two community meetings will also be held to discuss
    the RFP and respond to questions. Those meetings will be held on:
